September 21, 2022: INTERNATIONAL PEACE Day

A new September 21st arrived, reminding us that today is the International Peace Day (also known as the “World Peace Day”), which constitutes another inspiring occasion for all to celebrate PEACE. The chosen theme for this year is: "End racism. Build peace." Let's give PEACE a new chance!
"It is not enough to win a war; it is more important to organize the peace." (Aristotle)
● Historical background info:
“The International Day of Peace, also officially known as World Peace Day, is a United Nations-sanctioned holiday observed annually on 21 September. It is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. The day was first celebrated in 1981 and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and people.” (Source: Encyclopedia)
● Excerpt (UNITED NATIONS – International Peace Day 2022):
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.
But achieving true peace entails much more than laying down arms.  It requires the building of societies where all members feel that they can flourish. It involves creating a world in which people are treated equally, regardless of their race.
As Secretary-General António Guterres has said:
“Racism continues to poison institutions, social structures, and everyday life in every society. It continues to be a driver of persistent inequality. And it continues to deny people their fundamental human rights. It destabilizes societies, undermines democracies, erodes the legitimacy of governments, and… the linkages between racism and gender inequality are unmistakable.”
The 2022 theme for the International Day of Peace is “End racism. Build peace.” We invite you to join the efforts of the United Nations as we work towards a world free of racism and racial discrimination. A world where compassion and empathy overcome suspicion and hatred. A world that we can truly be proud of.

Alice’s Book Club – SUMMER session of 2022

Before the warm season of the year reached its completion, on Friday
(September 16’22), we had the summer session of my book club series, this time analyzing the book called “Stillness Speaks(written by Eckhart Tolle).
On this occasion, our online gathering was of a reasonable size and the atmosphere was abundantly filled with such a good cheer (in our midst), fact which brought along a pleasant sense of harmony, ease and joy.
Now, briefly speaking about this book: Eckhart Tolle (the author, who is a German-born resident of Canada, is also a teacher and an entrepreneur) shows “how to become your true self by embracing stillness and silence”. He also says: “When we are no longer limited by our thinking mind, suffering and pain disappear and we are able to move forward towards a new understanding of our relationships, of nature and of the profound wisdom that is to be found in stillness.”
The personal perspectives presented this evening were interesting, varied and filled with lots of insights.
For your reference, here are few concepts from the book, which might get your attention:
The equivalent of external noise is the inner noise of thinking. The equivalent of external silence is inner stillness.
When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.
- “Most people spend their entire life imprisoned within the confines of their own thoughts. They never go beyond a narrow, mind-made, personalized sense of self that is conditioned by the past.”
- “What it doesn't say — but only points to — is more important than what it says.”
- “For most things in life, you need time: to learn a new skill, build a house, become an expert, make a cup of tea. . . . Time is useless, however, for the most essential thing in life, the one thing that really matters: self-realization, which means knowing who you are beyond the surface self — beyond your name, your physical form, your history, your story.
- “You cannot find yourself in the past or future. The only place where you can find yourself is in the Now.” ...and so on....
As usual, time was flying by fast & we wrapped up the evening in a very enjoyable manner, committed to continue with our reading as well as sharing in this setting.
Also, once again, much appreciation to those who were able & willing to join me this evening….their on going support motivates me to prepare for the next project.
Until next time, my best regards to each of you!
Alice

UNIQUENESS or the courage to be yourself

Being yourself in a world where everyone is trying to fit around, it takes courage; yes, that beautiful courage which allows you to stand out and be unique.
If we look around we can see that people have some traits, habits or personalities which can be unlike others, and it feels to me that this makes a person more interesting & fascinating at times. But, it is also noticeable that the most beautiful thing & at the same time the hardest thing to tolerate is some people's uniqueness.
Over time, it has been observed that some people don't have problems with their uniqueness, but with the uniqueness of the others (in some way, it bothers them).
For sure each of you’ve heard those more or less ‘silent’ comments….if s/he's not like me, s/he has particular flaws…if s/he were like me, s/he would have the same flaws as me (and that would be very hard to bear), and so on…anyways, sometimes it is very complicated to make sense of all the pointless noise.
"Iubire ar fi destulă, dar nu are loc printre atâtea orgolii înghesuite."
On the other hand, I truly believe that it is great to have friends who appreciate you for who you are, otherwise life without them would be like a dessert…life with good friends and honest relationships gives us joy, fulfillment, security, meaning, health. At times, some relationships are not easy to maintain due to some disturbing interferences, but good friends you care about are worth the price.
Aside of that, just imagine:
– What it would be like for a whole world to talk a lot…definitively it would be super tiring!
– Or let them all be silent …what boredom that would be!
– Let everyone be impulsive…for sure they would break their heads!
– May they all be visionaries of projects…who no longer get to see their fulfillment, unfortunately!
– If all would be extroverts…there would be no room for each other.
– Or if all would be introverts…a world where no one talks to anyone….and the list goes on ...
One of the wonderful things about human society is the diversity in gifts and abilities, but in order for those various gifts to fit into the final inlay they have to be sanded and processed first, don't they? This is not simple, but it makes sense.
Personally, I truly believe that in life it is important to be true to yourself & be who you are, so be different & dare to embrace yourself as you are...be one of a kind!

PLANNING or the thinking before doing

I have no doubt that at some point along the way, every individual must have asked himself or herself about the significance of planning, or weather to have a plan or not, and how big it could (or should) be, etc.…yes, lots of plans (short-term, midterm or long-term), involving a lot of soul searching, self-analysis, dreaming and thinking, strengths and weaknesses examination, all these being driven by personal goals, vision or ambitions! And as in life, some ambitions might be bigger than others.

Generally speaking, planning is very important because it guides you where you need to go, “it gives you directions and decreases the danger of risk by making predictions”.

On the other hand, I’m sure that you also have heard those laud dreamers planning to save the world, or to save a number of endangered species of plants and animals somewhere in Africa, or those who really want to inhabit Mars, transforming it into a lush and friendly planet, and so on. Beautiful big dreams
(nothing wrong with that), but when those special dreams are so far off their reality it could become very frustrating, and that could attract a lasting sense of worthlessness (which is a very unhealthy and damaging feeling).

So, what to do? Well, once upon a time someone intelligent suggested that by “starting to make your own bed in the morning” could be a good beginning, or before you manage to plant a forest somewhere on Mars, better take care of the flowers from your balcony or plant a tree in front of your house (and diligently water it to grow).
In a nutshell, what I’m saying here is that those humongous goals are great, but they could be accomplished with a good plan, only after you learned how to achieve the smaller ones close to you (those ‘slender’ goals which are right in front of you)
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said a while back that “a goal without a plan is just a wish”. Making small and constructive changes to our immediate surroundings could bring upon a fresh sense of fulfillment, which leads to a great well-being…so, dear friends, during the journey, please stay healthy and…practical!

About LOVE & INTELLIGENCE

There are extensive studies in several fields of expertise indicating that love makes people more intelligent, and this is happening because our brains have a "love neural network" and a particular biochemistry that activates and increases a series of cognitive functions.
On the other hand, most elders of the world (from ancient times up to our days), claim in one voice that love makes better human beings.
Well, without any doubt, there is a lot to debate about these two vast subjects (love, respectively intelligence), but for the purpose of this brief assertion, mostly from a philosophical perspective, below I’m sharing with you several fragments of general interest…may you enjoy this reading!

ARTICLE:
~ Few excerpts ~
Intelligence is not separate from love ...
(by Jiddu Krishnamurti)
"Modern education, in developing the intellect, offers more and more theories and facts, without bringing about the understanding of the total process of human existence. We are highly intellectual; we have developed cunning minds, and are caught up in explanations. The intellect is satisfied with theories and explanations, but intelligence is not; and for the understanding of the total process of existence, there must be an integration of the mind and heart in action. Intelligence is not separate from love.
For most of us, to accomplish this inward revolution is extremely arduous. We know how to mediate, how to play the piano, how to write, but we have no knowledge of the mediator, the player, the writer. We are not creators, for we have filled our hearts & minds with knowledge, information & arrogance; we are full of quotations from what others have thought or said. But experiencing comes 1st, not the way of experiencing. There must be love before there can be the expression of it.
...
Information, the knowledge of facts, though ever increasing, is by its very nature limited. Wisdom is infinite, it includes knowledge and the way of action; but we take hold of a branch and think it is the whole tree. Through the knowledge of the part, we can never realize the joy of the whole. Intellect can never lead to the whole, for it is only a segment, a part.
We have separated intellect from feeling, and have developed intellect at the expanse of feeling.
We are like a three-legged object with one leg much longer than the others, and we have no balance. We are trained to be intellectual; our education cultivates the intellect to be sharp, cunning, acquisitive, and so it plays the most important role in our life. Intelligence is much greater than intellect, for it is the integration of reason and love; but there can be intelligence only when there is self-knowledge, the deep understanding of the total process of oneself.

What is essential for man, whether young or old, is to live fully, integrally, and that is why our major problem is the cultivation of that intelligence which brings integration. Undue emphasis on any part of our total make-up gives a partial and therefore distorted view of life, and it is this distortion which is causing most of our difficulties. Any partial development of our whole temperament is bound to be disastrous both for ourselves and for society, and so it is really very important that we approach our human problems with an integrated point of view.
To be an integrated human being is to understand the entire process of one's own consciousness, both the hidden and the open. This is not possible if we give due emphasis to the intellect. We attach great importance to the cultivation of the mind, but inwardly we are insufficient, poor and confused. This living in the intellect is the way of disintegration; for ideas, like beliefs, can never bring people together except in conflicting groups.
As long as we depend on thought as a means of integration, there must be disintegration; and to understand the disintegrating action of thought is to be aware of the ways of the self, the ways of one's own desire. We must be aware of our conditioning and its responses, both collective and personal. It is only when one is fully aware of the activities of the self with its contradictory desires and pursuits, its hopes and fears, that there is a possibility of going beyond the self.
Only love and right thinking will bring about true revolution, the revolution within ourselves. But how are we to have love? Not through the pursuit of the ideal of love, but only when there is no hatred, when there is no greed, when the sense of self, which is the cause of antagonism, comes to an end. A man who is caught up in the pursuits of exploitation, of greed, of envy, can never love.
Without love and right thinking, oppression and cruelty will ever be on the increase. The problem of man's antagonism to man can be solved, not by pursuing the ideal of peace, but by understanding the causes of war which lie in our attitude towards life, towards our fellow-beings; and this understanding can come about only through the right kind of education. Without a change of heart, without goodwill, without the inward transformation which is born of self-awareness, there can be no peace, no happiness for men. "
"Intelligence and love are not in separate compartments: love is rich in intelligence and intelligence is full of love." (J. Ratzinger)

Inspiration of the day: QUIETUDE

Ludwig van Beethoven: Silencio (classical music)
In the midst of everything, while ‘noise’ of any kind surrounds us we could easily get disconnected from ourselves to such an extent that we are not able to hear anymore that valuable inner voice (so called by many, the inner voice of reason), which always contains the wisdom that we need to heal, to grow, and to put our thoughts together in order to further carry on with our journey (swiftly and joyfully).

Quietude is the only 'avenue' able to take us back within, where is peace, where is clarity, where is simplicity, where is the fundamental truth of life, we each need.
Many times we all search for answers and clarity, and more often than not, we are looking into the wrong direction for guidance.
In the current super consumerist society it could become a real challenge to go beyond the mind chattering in a consistent manner.

There are extensive studies explaining that only in silence people could focus and recognize the truth.
Only in a safe and calm environment we might be able to ‘shift’ from the outer into the inner world, where we could find peace, direction, sense, the needed healing & the meaningful answers that we mistakenly were looking for where else.

If you haven’t practice such recollection yet, I encourage you to take time to find your oasis of peace, while remembering: the quieter you become the more you can hear!
“Listen to the silence; it has so much to say.”

TIME is flying by very fast

Whether we realize it or not, time is a tremendously valuable treasure, and unfortunately so many people waste it foolishly in lots of meaningless activities.
Philosophers believe that if we would take care of time, other things would take care of themselves automatically.
The greatest figures of the history knew the value of time, so that’s is why they were able to leave remarkable footprints behind.
Generally speaking people want success, happiness, money, fame, etc., etc., but the records have shown that only those who make the best of their time could have many of these. We all grow in time, live in time, die in time, and that’s why every minute is so important. Nothing is more significant than time! As I've said before, time is more powerful than kings and princess
(who come and go)...time goes on eternally. Time is destiny, it is history, it is civilization. Nothing is beyond time! Time is way more precious than money. We identify time as birth, growth, decay and death, but time is neither a beginning nor an end. Time is forever. Everyone should appreciate the value of time and make good use of it, because time is an opportunity, and if it slips through our hands, we can’t bring it back so that’s why it is crucial to make sure we spend it wisely.
On the other hand, life is very short. It has been said by many that it is like a drop in the ocean, and this drop should not be wasted…it should be turned into a pearl by using it wisely and thoughtfully.
For your brief enjoyment, here is a short story shared by an intelligent woman, which I find appropriate to pass it on…peaceful reading, dear ones!
Insights
“I am no longer waiting for a special occasion; I burn the best candles on ordinary days.
I am no longer waiting for the house to be clean; I fill it with people who understand that even dust is part of life.
I am no longer waiting for everyone to understand me; it’s just not their task.
I am no longer waiting for the perfect kids; my children have their own names that burn as brightly as any star.
I am no longer waiting for the other shoe to drop; it already did, and I survived.
I am no longer waiting for the time to be right; the time is always now.
I am no longer waiting for the mate who will complete me; I am grateful to be so warmly and tenderly held.
I am no longer waiting for a quiet moment; my heart can be stilled whenever it is called.
I am no longer waiting for the world to be at peace; I unclench my grasp and breathe peace in and out.
I am no longer waiting to do something great; being awake to carry my grain of sand is enough.
I am no longer waiting to be recognized; I know that I could dance each time I choose to.
I am no longer waiting for Forgiveness; I offer it and move on.”
Life is short. Time is fast. No replay. No rewind. Enjoy every moment as it comes.

Few thoughts about THE WAY PEOPLE THINK

Whether we agree or not, many times, the mind "grinds" negative thoughts of dissatisfaction (such as lack of forgiveness, non-acceptance, resentment, envy, etc.) and in such situation/s, logically speaking, it has no way of generating a positive and a healthy experience, isn’t it?!
The extraordinary part of it is that the mind (representing the totality of your thoughts) is "under the direction" of your will, which is basically the ability to choose the kinds of thoughts it will host, and that in itself gives us all tremendous hope. Your thoughts are like seeds: what you sow, you reap (right?!), and based on that you could choose a certain way of thinking and subsequently a certain way of living.
Despite the fact that in our society, a human being does not always have the ability to influence the external circumstances and the behavior of his or her fellows, in the end s/he still has the ability to choose how to react to what it is done to her or to him.
Do you remember the saying: “life is 20 percent what happens to you and 80 percent how you respond”? Generally, that’s pretty much the case! Let it be clear that positive thinking does not mean you do not notice the bad things in life; it means that you try to find a solution in a productive way instead of whining about it.
I know, in theory it sounds good and easy, but practically speaking it is a bit harder.
Well, as you all know, when the ground slips away from under your feet, cling to the sky…Sunday is coming!
Meanwhile, dear friends please stay healthy and wise!
"The measure of happiness in your life depends on the quality of your thoughts" (Marcus Aurelius)
